The spotlight is on Permatang Pauh again. The third time after the Penanti by-election which was won by PKR’s Dr Mansor Osman who was subsequently made Deputy Chief Minister 1.

It will be the third by-election in Permatang Pauh, of which, Anwar Ibrahim is the MP, since the last general election. This time it will be in Permatang Pasir, deemed as a PAS stronghold. The result of the last general election proves this when PAS’s Datuk Mohd Hamdan Abdul Rahman won by a huge majority of 5,433 votes, quite a feat for a small state constituency.

Hamdan obtained 11,004 votes against Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate, Ahmad Sahar Shuib  who garnered 5,571 votes.

The by-election is unavoidable when Hamdan died a heart attack on July 31.The Permatang Pasir state by-election has been fixed for Aug 25 while the nomination will be on Aug 17, the Election Commission announced.

They claimed that Chinese votes which constitute about 25% of the electorate of 23,000 will be the key or deciding factor to victory as the 72% Malays votes are split.

Everyone in Penang is aware that PAS has been played out by DAP and Lim Guan Eng. PAS was not given a state exco seat even though the late Handan was a state assemblymen way before Pakatan-Rakyat took control of Penang.

Hamdan was a three-term state assemblyman since 1999. He had served in that capacity for almost and yet Lim Guan Eng did not see it as a merit for him to be appointed as a state exco. Pity Hamdan and PAS.

We hope the new Penang Umno liaison chief Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has do Umno faces a tough battle in Anwar’s own backyard — a seat alternatively held by Anwar and his wife and PKR president Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail since 1982.

Many believe that Umno will lose “pants down” in the by-election. I agree with that but I feel Umno will be defeated by doings of party members and not because PAS is strong.

The claimed that Chinese votes which constitute about 25% of the electorate of 23,000 will be the key or deciding factor to victory is a mere rhetoric.

The task looks insurmountable for Ahmad Zahid but it is not unattainable if everyone in the party plays their part and role and sincere in their efforts.

Many believe that Umno will lose “pants down” in the by-election. I agree with that but I feel Umno will be defeated by doings of party members and not because PAS is strong.

Zahid should first ensure that he heads the election machinery and not Datuk Abdul Jalil Abdul Majid, the Umno warlord in Permatang Pauh. I am definite that Abdul Jalil will orchestrate a meeting and instruct his “balachis” (errands) to nominate him as the election director since he is the division chairman.

It is as good as kissing good-bye  if Zahid fails to discipline Abdul Jalil. Abdul Jalil knows the game too well. He knows how to make millions from the by-election. The Permatang Pauh by-election was a clear cut case where millions went into Abdul Jalil’s own pocket.

Datuk Arif  Shah who was BN’s candidate even complained to me that he was given peanuts to fight against Anwar, the PKR supremo and candidate. Surprisingly, two of Abdul Jalil’s bag carriers for the by-election admitted to me that some RM20mil exchanged hands during the by-election. Phew! I just couldn’t believe it. Abdul Jalil also received a RM6mil pay check from Penang Umno treasurer Datuk Zainal Abdidin Osman or affectionately known as Non Panjang.

I believe Arif because he kept on repeating during his press conferences during the by-election that he was a poor candidate and state assemblyman,. But no one bothered, including Umno president himself at the time, Pak Lah.

And Pak Lah did not even lift a finger even though someone whispered to him about the problem.

As I said earlier, Umno can win or reduce PAS majority votes significantly in Permatang Pasir if Zahid controls his men well and not let the Umno warlords pulled him by the nose.

Umno real fight in Permatang Pasir is not against PAS but Abdul Jalill and his “balachis.”

If this Abdul Jalil character is such a pain in the ass, why don’t DSN just remove him for the good of the party? Maybe these are all just guessing or the PKR’s ploy to distract BN.
